Miracle products to clean your home from floor to ceiling, we all dream of them, don't we? We all know the benefits of products like white vinegar, baking soda and citric acid (to name but a few!).

Except that when we prepare our DIY products with these powders or liquids, we realise that the application is not always easy. The disadvantage? They are very liquid, so it's difficult to leave them on a shower screen or in the toilet.

Couldn't the solution be to turn our DIY household products into a gel ? 

Xanthan gum is a naturally occurring polymer of natural sugars produced by biotechnology: fermentation of beet, cane or corn sugar by Xanthomonnas campestris bacteria found in cabbage. It comes in the form of a very fine white powder.

It is 100% biodegradable and guaranteed GMO-free. Xanthan gum is a gelling and thickening agent for aqueous phases. It allows to modify the viscosity and the texture of aqueous phases. 

With a low concentration (less than 0.5%), it stabilises emulsions while providing a silky texture. With a higher concentration, it has a strong thickening power and will allow you to create high viscosity textures.

Xanthan gum from La Droguerie Écologique allows you to make your own gelled household products. With little odour, you can create vinegar gel, oven cleaner, toilet gel, descaler gel for simple and biodegradable products at home. Simply combine it with multi-purpose powders (citric acid, bicarbonate of soda, percarbonate, soda crystals, spirit vinegar, etc.). You will obtain a gel texture that will facilitate cleaning and replace many single-action household products : oven stripper, barbecue, toilet descaler, bathroom cleaner, etc. Xanthan gum makes it possible to create perfectly transparent gels, and remains very stable over time. 

The gel texture allows it to remain in place even on inclined surfaces. The gel does not run and dries much more slowly. So you use less product and your cleaning is simplified !

Dose from 0.3% to 2% depending on the desired viscosity, directly into vinegar, or into an aqueous solution of household powder such as sodium percarbonate or citric acid.

1 - Degreasing cleaning gel or washing-up liquid
Pour 400 ml of water into a bowl and add 4 tablespoons* of concentrated soda crystals with 1 tablespoon* of black soap. Mix vigorously (with an electric whisk if possible) until the powder is dissolved in the water. Add 8 g of xanthan gum and mix. Pour the mixture into a 500 ml pump bottle. Applied to a sponge, it can be used as a washing-up liquid.

2 - Multi-purpose vinegar gel (anti-scale - descaler - degreaser)
Mix energetically (if possible with an electric whisk) 400 ml of white spirit vinegar with 4 to 8 g of xanthan gum depending on the desired texture. You can add a few drops of essential oil (lemon, lavender, eucalyptus ...) for the smell. Pour the preparation into a pump bottle of at least 500 ml. Adjust the quantity of gum: if you want a more liquid version, pour only 4 g of gum, for the maintenance of your toilets, or to clean your taps for example. For a gel texture, as an anti-limescale application on joints or shower walls, for example, use 8 g of gum in your preparation.

3 - Sodium percarbonate gel (bleaching - cleaning - scouring) 
Mix 400 ml of water with 40 g of sodium percarbonate in a bowl. Add 8 g of xanthan gum slowly (even if the percarbonate is not completely dissolved) and mix again. Pour the mixture into a bottle of at least 500 ml. This recipe will allow you to clean your oven, tile grout, barbecue grills, etc. This recipe can be adapted to other natural cleaning powders. You can replace the percarbonate with citric acid (descaling, rust removal, etc.), or with soda crystals (surfaces to be degreased, burnt pans, etc.) depending on the results you want.
