Wintergreen essential oil Wintergreen is a small, aromatic bush native to North America. It is also cultivated in certain Chinese provinces. Due to its predominantly methyl salicylate composition, Wintergreen has anti-inflammatory and anti-analgesic properties, similar to those of aspirin. Light yellow in colour and aromatic in scent, the essential oil of Wintergreen is often used to flavour sweets. The very recognisable smell is often reminiscent of the massage creams used by sportsmen.
This oil can be used exclusively for massage and is a remarkable analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent. Its well-known smell is reminiscent of the balm used by sportsmen. Its high level of methyl salicate (over 95%) gives it its properties, which are much appreciated by sportsmen. You can use it alone, mixed with a vegetable oil like Macadamia, before, during or after exercise. But you can also mix it with the essential oil of Rom.
*The chemotype is the identity card of the essential oil, its chemical composition defined by chromatographic analysis. The same plant can have several compositions depending on the place and the variety. A chemotype depends on a property, an odour and a taste.
The essential oil of Gaultheria procumbens is composed of more than 95% methyl salicylate. This gives it powerful analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties for the skin. It is thus one of the rare essential oils that is almost monomolecular.
Allergens naturally contained in this essential oil : Linalool, Eugenol.
Muscle pain and contractures (lumbago, strain, sprain, cramp, backache), anti-inflammatory and analgesic, orange peel skin, etc.
Main : Anti-inflammatory, Analgesic, Antispasmodic, Antiprotozoal, Vasodilator.
The essential oil of wintergreen is to be used exclusively in massage and diluted to avoid skin irritation. Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Not recommended for children under 6 years of age. Not for internal use in self-medication. Rich in methyl salicylate, it is not recommended if you are allergic to salicylic derivatives (aspirin, etc.) or if you are on anticoagulant treatment.
Essential oils are powerful natural substances and should therefore be used with care. Even if essential oils have been used since Antiquity, their mode of use and the precautions for use are often poorly known. Many books deal with essential oils. It is therefore advisable to refer to it to find out about the traditional modes of use.
As an indication, some examples of use
It is advisable to mix a few drops of essential oil of wintergreen with a vegetable oil (sweet almond, jojoba, macadamia, rose hip, argan, olive, etc.) to use it as a massage oil.
To relieve sensitive or stiffened muscles and joints and promote their flexibility, you can dilute 2 to 3 drops in vegetable oil and then massage the areas concerned. For athletes, apply before (to warm up), during and after training (to relax).
Against a toothache : prepare an oil by mixing 100ml of vegetable oil, 20 drops of Scots pine EO, 30 drops of wintergreen EO and 30 drops of clove EO. Massage the face with this mixture, at the level of the painful tooth.
An essential oil is made up of chemically defined molecules (about 10,000 listed) that have been secreted by special plant cells. It can consist of from one to several hundred molecules, which helps explain why some essential oils have many properties but different therapeutic effectiveness. To guarantee the properties necessary for effective aromatherapy, it is important that an essential oil is 100% pure and natural (not cut, not deterpenated, not mixed with alcohol or vegetable oils) and preferably organic. This is the case for the essential oils we sell. They are sold in tinted bottles with a dropper cap.
