Who is the Hornet ?

The hornet, also known by the scientific name Vespa, is a fascinating insect that arouses both admiration and fear in the entomological world. With its bright colors and imposing size, it does not go unnoticed. However, behind its spectacular appearance hides a fearsome predator.

Equipped with a powerful stinger, hornets use their venom to paralyze their prey and feed their larvae. Their diet is varied and includes insects, fruits and, worryingly, bees. It is this feeding habit that has resulted in a rivalry relationship with beekeepers, as hornets can cause significant damage to beehives and decimate bee populations.

Many areas have seen the arrival of new hornet species, such as the Asian hornet (Vespa velutina), which raises concerns about their impact on local biodiversity. Faced with these challenges, scientific studies and appropriate management measures are necessary to better understand and control their spread. But beware, not all hornets are necessarily formidable bee predators. Some species of hornets are considered beneficial for the balance of ecosystems, as they mainly attack other harmful insects. Thus, it is essential not to generalize and to distinguish the different species of hornets according to their behaviors.

How to fight hornets ?

If their presence is not problematic or dangerous, it is best to leave them alone and coexist with them. If you are confronted with an infestation of hornets or a nest dangerously close to frequented areas, it is recommended to intervene, either by yourself but you will have to remain very careful, or to call on pest control professionals or experienced beekeepers for an adequate and secure intervention.

Hornet stings can be very painful to humans, and for some susceptible people, they can cause severe allergic reactions. It is therefore important to be aware of their presence and to take precautions in areas where they are active.

As soon as the fine weather returns, wasps and hornets (Asian or not) start building their nest; a mated queen lays the larvae that will help her build a home the size of a rugby ball. Roofs, chimneys, entrance porches and other lean-tos form a preferred nesting environment for these insects. Its proximity can represent a risk of bites for the whole family and your pets. To spot the swarm, you will have to observe the back and forth of the Hymenoptera and follow them to their starting point.

Once the nest has been located, the special wasp and hornet nest spray will be of great help to you. Its powerful jet carrying up to a distance of 6 meters will allow you to reach wasps or hornets without approaching them, thus working in complete safety. Usage tips

Preferably apply at dusk when insect activity is reduced. Shake before use. Spray aiming directly at the nest or swarm until the aerosol is completely empty. An aerosol is used to treat a nest. Proceed with brief pressures, without prolonged spraying. Ventilate well after use. Do not spray against the wind and on plants or plants. The power of the jet can cause a slight recoil effect.

Wasp nests : what not to do

If you are considering getting rid of wasps, there are some mistakes you should not make :

- Approach the nest during the day when the wasps are active.
- Do not fully cover your body
- Shine a flashlight on the nest (the light will wake up its occupants)
- Throw the nest in a warm place and near its home. Some wasps that appear dead can regain their energy and sting
- Burn the nest. Composed of a mixture of chewed wood and saliva, a bee-eater is highly flammable. Setting fire could start a fire
- Destroy the nest with a stick. Removing the bee-eater must be done calmly. Using a tool to destroy it will irritate the wasps and encourage them to sting
- Gesticulate in the presence of wasps. The more you move, the more you excite them and cause a risk of being pricked
- Call the fire department. This solution should be chosen as a last resort. In some regions, firefighters still agree to intervene for free, but in others, the intervention will be paid for. Barracks also refuse to move. Given the many missions incumbent on firefighters, the destruction of your nest will not be dealt with urgently.

Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated room. As this insecticide contains a high dosage of pyrethrum, it is particularly suitable for insects classified as resistant. Wasps and hornets are therefore the No. 1 target for this product.

Yes, absolutely, this product is pressurised and equipped with an extended spray for better aim. You can therefore apply it up to 6 metres away to avoid insect agitation and the risk of stings during spraying.

Do not puncture or burn, even after use. Avoid breathing aerosols. Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Avoid release into the environment. Call a poison control center or doctor immediately if you feel unwell. Protect from sunlight. Do not expose to temperature above 50 oC/ 122 oF. Dispose of the packaging and its contents in accordance with the national regulations in force. Soiled packaging and unused product must be disposed of in the recycling center. For safety, use only for the intended use and in accordance with the instructions. Proceed with brief pressures, without prolonged spraying. Ventilate well after use. Do not spray on/toward humans and animals. Cover or remove food, dishes, aquariums, terrariums and cages. Turn off power to aquarium pumps before spraying.
