Alum stone : dangerous or harmless ?

What is alum stone ?

To begin, let's remember what an alum stone is.

Alum stone is a crystal extracted from a mineral called alunite or bauxite. The latter has long come from Syrian quarries. Today, it is present in mines, surface outcrops or volcanic soils all over the world. This mineral is a double sulfate of aluminum and potassium.

Alum stone can be found in 2 forms :
- In block form : Once purified, the potassium alum crystals are recrystallized in the form of a block or stick that can be used directly on the skin.
- In powder : The crystals are then ground into a very fine powder which will be incorporated into your homemade cosmetic preparations for the same properties.

The benefits of alum stone

Respectful of your skin and the environment, it is an ideal alternative to commercial deodorants. Without aluminum hydrochlorides, without perfume, without silicones, without preservatives or propellant gases destroying the ozone layer, Alum Stone is a major ally in natural cosmetics.

It has many benefits. First of all for its astringent nature which means that it tightens the pores of the skin. This characteristic allows it to regulate perspiration and to be used as an antiperspirant and natural deodorant but it also reduces the deposition of sebum in oily skin. Thanks to this property, the stone also facilitates healing, it is often used following hair removal or shaving to stop micro-bleeding and soothe the skin.

Simple, quick to use and also advantageous from an economic point of view, the latter can be used for years without losing its effectiveness, knowing that a single 100 g stick is equivalent to the use of around ten conventional spray deodorants.

Aluminum controversy

The only aluminum derivative currently in question is aluminum chlorohydrate, also called aluminum zirconium pentachlorohydrate. The other derivatives are currently classified as harmless with regard to their use in cosmetics and possible passage through the skin.

But be careful with aluminum introduced into the body, whether through food or vaccines.

It is now proven that aluminum accumulates in the brain and that this accumulation is one of the causes of Alzheimer's disease.

The latest report from September 2016, following the study carried out by 2 Swiss researchers on mice, shows that prolonged exposure to aluminum salt can indeed lead to the appearance of tumors.

The aluminum oxide present in clays of all kinds is not harmful to the body.

But keep in mind that : Natural alum stone does not contain aluminum chlorohydrates and no official remark, study or fact has concluded that it is of any toxicity under reasonable conditions of use.

Properties of alum stone

As we have said, it is an excellent astringent and antiseptic.

It has the advantage of not covering one odor with another. It does not prevent you from sweating, it simply prevents the proliferation of bacteria responsible for bad odors. The particular structure of the molecules means that they cannot penetrate the skin.

Be careful for people with sensitive skin : if you use alum stone too soon after shaving or waxing, skin irritation may occur.

Natural or synthetic alum stone

Natural : Potassium alum stone based on alunite, extracted in blocks from alum-bearing schist quarries, then cut and polished. Careers are found in various parts of the world.
Synthetic : Alum stone made from ammonium salt, a by-product of the Asian heavy chemical industry (by-product of Caprolactam from the nylon industries).

Composition of natural alum

It is a salt (double sulfate) composed of aluminum sulfate, potassium sulfate and water of crystallization.

Aluminum, in the form of hydroxide or oxide (alumina) is the essential constituent of clays.

Aluminum hydroxide + hydrogen sulfate = aluminum sulfate + water

Potassium hydroxide + hydrogen sulfate = potassium sulfate + water

stone alum

We thus obtain 2 salts making it possible to form the double sulfate of aluminum and potassium known more simply as ALUN.

Natural alum stone must have the sole indication INCI : Potassium Alum.

Alum stone : ecological and economical deodorant

The manufacture of alum stone is very ecological since after extraction, it is just polished so as to remove the rough edges which could cause injury during its use.

It is also very economical since an alum stone can last at least 1 year, so overall 5 to 10 times more than a traditional deodorant !

Our 100% natural Alum Stones

We currently have no precise information on synthetic ammonium-based stone but, as a precaution and for ethics, our Alum stones are of natural origin, based on potassium.

Ingredients: Potassium Alum or 100% natural potassium salt.

If you see the term "Ammonium" appear in the composition, then beware, it is no longer an alum stone of natural origin.

The choice is not gigantic, but, at the same time, an alum stone remains an alum stone!! The difference will be found in the mode of application. You can therefore apply it as a stick, spray or roll on, depending on what suits you best.

REMINDER : All our alum stones are guaranteed to be free of aluminum chlorohydrate.
