ECOLABEL, Environmental detergents

What products?

There are currently 4 ranges of maintenance products that can benefit from the Ecoabel:

- Hand dish liquid

- Detergent for dishwasher

- Textile cleaner

- Multi-use cleaners and sanitary cleaners

Attribution of the School

Overall, to get the School, just follow the following 6 rules:

1 - Job ability or performance tested and guaranteed.

2 - Product safety.

3 - Limitation of harmful substances for the aquatic environment.

4 - Increased biodegradability.

5 - Reduced packaging.

6 - Instructions for use for environmentally friendly use.

Or more formally, regulation 3 (EC) No. 1980/2000 provides that the ecological label may be assigned to a product with characteristics that allow it to contribute significantly to:

- Limit releases of toxic or polluting substances in the aquatic environment.

- Limit or prevent health or environment risks associated with the use of hazardous substances.

- To minimize packaging waste.

- Promote the dissemination of information that will enable the consumer to use the product effectively and minimize its impact on the environment.

Ecolabel for hand dish liquid

- Job ability or Performance tested and guaranteed.

The product must be fit for employment and meet the needs of consumers.

- Product safety

No hazardous or toxic substances or preparations.

However, biocides used to keep the product and to which the risk phrases R50 + 53 or R51 + 53 are assigned for classification purposes are nevertheless allowed.

Note: R50 + 53 (very toxic to aquatic organisms and can lead to long-term adverse effects on the aquatic environment)

R51 + 53 (toxic for aquatic organisms and can cause long-term adverse effects for the aquatic environment).

Any ingredient added to the product as an fragrant substance must have been manufactured and/or processed according to the International Association of Raw Materials Code for Perfumery.

Dyes or dyes used in the product must be allowed.

- Limitation of harmful substances for the aquatic environment

Limitation of total tensio-active agents by washing. The total weight of tensio-active agents in the recommended dose for a litre of dish water should not exceed 0.4 grams for dirty dishes.

- Increased biodegradability

Easy biodegradability (aerobiosis).

Any tensio-active agent entering the composition of the product must be easily biodegradable. Success thresholds are 70% for the tests specified in Appendix V.

Biodegradability in anaerobiosis:

Any tensio-active agent entering the composition of the product must be biodegradable in anerobic conditions. Minimum requirement of 60% degradability under anerobic conditions

- Reduction of packagings

The primary packaging must have a volumetric packaging coefficient (CVE) less than or equal to 1.9. This criterion does not apply if the primary packaging is made up of at least 50% recycled materials.

- Instructions for use for environmentally friendly use

On the packaging of the product must include the following information:

"To wash as efficiently as possible, save water and energy and protect the environment, immerse the dishes instead of washing the tap jet, and respect the recommended doses. Effective washing does not require a large amount of foam." (or equivalent text).

A few specifics

With regard to universal cleansers and sanitary cleaners, it is indicated that phosphorus, phosphonates and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are not prohibited but should not exceed a fixed maximum.

Note: Phosphates have been banned since 1 July 2007 in all textile detergents, whether with or without Ecolabel!

If the Ecoabel allows for a step forward towards the protection of people and the environment, it currently only guarantees products manufactured with natural raw materials. So be careful not to confuse "ecological" and "natural"!

On the site of the water agency, (Public Institution attached to the Ministry of Ecology) we found these few lines that seem to summarise the Ecoabel:

"At present, on a regulatory level, the ecolabel applied to products is based on the reduction of the weight of packagings, performance criteria, consumer information and the limitation of the content of toxic components. The Agency wishes to strengthen ecolabel criteria for ecotoxicity and biodegradability on levial formulations. "
