Zoom on vegetable glycerin
Have you ever heard of it? still called glycerol of its chemical name, glycerin is very often found in the formulation of moisturizing care for the body, for the face, of hair products, but also in our medicines, food, antifreezes, in some industries...and even in the manufacture of your household products! it is one of the flagship products of the diy followers (do yourself). glycerin offers multiple strengths: softening, humectant, helping to preserve your home macerates ... the list is long !
Glycerin occurs in the form of a rather viscous and thick, colourless and odorless liquid. it is obtained by saponification of vegetable oils. The saponification corresponds to the chemical reaction to obtain soap. During this reaction, a fatty body, associated with a strong base often of soda, allows to obtain soap but also another product: the famous glycerin.
Vegetable glycerin is a moisturizing agent for the skin and hair. It integrates very easily into your emulsions (milk creams), shower gels, shampoos... to which it brings a very soft touch. it will also allow you to realize your own hydroglycereal macera of plants. glycerin is ideal for all skin types, especially dry and dehydrated skins.
Vegetable glycerin is soluble in water and alcohol. It is not soluble in oil.
If you like to make your own cosmetics or use grandmother's tricks in everyday life or for household, vegetable glycerin is one of the essential foundations.
Anaean glycerin comes from the transformation of mustard. It is very pure and guaranteed without ogm.

Use vegetable glycerin in practice
In cosmetics, vegetable glycerin should be used diluted on the skin at the risk of irritation or slight allergies. incorporate glycerin into the aqueous phase of your cosmetic preparations before emulsion. add 1 to 10% of the total weight of your preparation.
- In emulsions (creams, milks): mix the glycerin to the aqueous phase before emulsification. Recommended dosage: 1 to 8 % (total weight of preparation)
- In lip balms: integrate glycerin by stirring well during taking the balm to cooling, so as to properly disperse glycerin in the balm. Recommended dosage: 1 to 10%
- In shower gels and shampoos: add glycerin in the mixture of tensioactive. Recommended dosage: 1 to 10%
- In plant hydroglycereal macera: use a water/glycerine mixture as a maceration solvent. Recommended dosage: 10 to 70% - the higher the percentage of glycerin, the better the macera can be kept even in the absence of a preservative (over 50-60% glycerin), but a high rate of glycerin will limit the percentage of introduction of your macera in your preparations.
Tips for the dosage of glycerin
In products intended to be left on the skin (creams, milks, unripe lotions), glycerin overdose (over 10)% could have a drying effect on the skin, unlike the desired effect. In addition, above 10%, glycerin will usually give an unpleasant sticky touch. for a face cream with good moisturizing action and pleasant touch, we recommend a dosage of 2 to 5% vegetable glycerin.
You can increase this dosage up to 8% for specific care with very soft effect on rough areas such as hands and feet. If you realize a hydroglycerated macera containing 50% glycerin, you can use your macera at a maximum of 20% in your cosmetic preparations to not exceed 10% glycerin in the preparation.
