Yield whole plant : 0,25% to 0,5%. It is thus necessary 100 kg of leaf of plant to obtain between 250 and 500 gr of essential oil of tarragon. 

Some information on tarragon

Tarragon is a semi-evergreen herbaceous perennial plant native to Central Asia, cultivated for its fragrant leaves for condiment use. It is more difficult to cultivate in France. It is mainly found in Provence. The Arab doctors already used its essential oil in the year 1000. Its smell is aniseed and fresh.

In the Middle Ages, Avicene already reported the antispasmodic and digestive properties of the essential oil of tarragon. Its current fame is due to its effectiveness to drive out gas and intestinal fermentations as well as the pain of the periods. The essential oil of tarragon is widely used in aromatherapy for its neuromuscular antispasmodic, antiviral and antiallergic properties. The essential oil of tarragon is very similar to the essential oil of exotic basil (tropical) both in terms of precautions and properties. 

In summary, it is a very good anti-allergic and anti-spasmodic muscle, especially when there are respiratory symptoms: allergic cough, spasmodic cough. The essential oil of tarragon is known for its action able to treat the hiccups and all the small digestive concerns. It opens the appetite and facilitates digestion by fighting against bloating and helping to expel intestinal gases.

It is also effective against motion sickness, whatever the means used.

In diffusion, it is a remedy for the small blows of blues because it is a good cerebral tonic which facilitates the mental activity. It also repels insects and perfumes the house.

It is finally used to calm the pain, such as the painful periods, the muscular contractures, the cramps, the sciatica.

Chemical formula

The main constituents of tarragon essential oil are methylchavicol (65 to 85%) and estragole.

Attention !

Tarragon essential oil can be irritating by inhalation for sensitive people. Not recommended for pregnant and breast-feeding women as well as for babies under 3 years old, except in atmospheric diffusion. No prolonged use of this essential oil without the advice of an aromatherapist.

 

Usage tips

Essential oils are powerful natural substances and should therefore be used with care. Even if essential oils have been used since Antiquity, their mode of use and the precautions for use are often poorly known. Many books deal with essential oils. It is therefore advisable to refer to it to find out about the traditional modes of use.

As an indication, some examples of use 

 

oral use

Tarragon essential oil can help relieve a hiccup. In a small bottle, mix 3 ml of essential oil of tarragon + 1 ml of essential oil of small grain. To put 2 drops of this mixture on a neutral tablet and to swallow one every 15 minutes during 1 hour.

Against motion sickness : in a small bottle, mix 1 ml of essential oil of tarragon + 2 ml of essential oil of peppermint and 2 ml of small grain. Put 2 drops of this mixture on a 1/2 sugar to suck.

Against aerophagia, bloating or flatulence : in a small bottle, mix 1 ml of essential oil of tarragon + 2 ml of essential oil of fennel and 1 ml of essential oil of tropical basil. Ingest 2 drops of this mixture in a teaspoon of olive oil before a meal.

Application by massage or compress It is advisable to mix a few drops of essential oil with a vegetable oil (sweet almond, jojoba, macadamia, rose hip, argan, olive, etc.) to use as a massage oil. You will use the essential oil of tarragon in localized massage against the buzzing of ear. Apply 1 drop of small grain + 1 drop of tarragon + 1 drop of helichrysum and apply around the ear 3 times/day for 1 week.

Against spasmodic coughs : in a small bottle, mix 2 ml of essential oil of tarragon + 3 ml of essential oil of cypress and 1 ml of essential oil of small grain. Massage 6 drops of this mixture 3 times a day on the chest and upper back for 5 days.

Against bloating, apply a few drops of this oil diluted in a vegetable oil directly on the stomach.

Against muscle pain, tendonitis and cramps : mix in a bottle of 50 ml of arnica macerate, 1 ml of essential oil of tarragon + 2 ml of essential oil of wintergreen + 15 drops of essential oil of peppermint and finally 1 ml of essential oil of lavender, then gently massage the painful area 3 to 4 times / day for 2 days.
