Originally from South Africa, there are currently more than 700 species of native or hybrid geraniums, the majority of which are ornamental. They are cultivated all over the world, particularly in China, in the Maghreb countries, including Egypt. The Egyptian Geranium is a Rose Geranium and has the same properties as its Bourbon counterpart, however the "Bourbon" Geranium is renowned for its finer, flowery and sweet (and also more expensive) olfactory quality.

The commercial qualities of geraniums are very different. The magnificent geraniums which adorn the small Alsatian villages every year are not of the same species as the rose geranium which is used in aromatherapy or perfumery. Their composition and properties also. Pay particular attention to the origin of the oil! It is, with lemon, one of the most used essential oils in aromatherapy. It harmonizes well with most essential oils by balancing the scents, it is also widely used in the manufacture of perfumes. It is suitable for all kinds of skins. By balancing the secretion of sebum, it will preserve the elasticity of the skin. Finally, studies show that it contains compounds capable of repelling insects and mosquitoes, which has earned it common use in atmospheric diffusion.

Rose Geranium essential oil has citronellol, geraniol and linalool as its main constituents.

Allergens naturally contained in this essential oil : Citronellol (18 to 30%), Geraniol (9 to 17%), Linalool (3 to 15%), Citral (≤2%), Limonene (≤0.5%).
