Some information about bergamot

Organic bergamot essential oil

The bergamot tree is 4 to 5 metres high. It was discovered by Christopher Columbus on the Canary Islands and introduced to Italy, now the world's leading producer. The essential oil has a more or less dark yellow-green colour and a characteristic fresh, fruity aroma.

It has an irresistible citrus and floral fragrance, combining perfectly with cypress, geranium, lavender, lemon and ylang-ylang. Its scent is fresh, floral and lemony. It leaves a tangy, sweet taste on the palate. The oil is expensive because of its low yield.

It is widely used in perfumery (eau de Cologne) and as a flavouring for teas (Earl Grey tea, for example). It is also used in certain confectionery products, such as Nancy bergamots.

Antifungal and healing, bergamot essential oil is excellent for treating various skin problems, such as acne, and soothes dry, irritated skin. An antiseptic, it is also recommended against colds and will soothe you. Both invigorating and relaxing, it is frequently used to relieve nervousness, anxiety and depression (calming and sedative).

Recommendations for use

Essential oils are powerful natural substances and should therefore be used with caution. Even though essential oils have been used since ancient times, their method of use and precautions are often poorly understood. Many books deal with essential oils. It is therefore advisable to refer to them for information on traditional methods of use.

Here are just a few examples of use

Use by broadcasting

In case of agitation, to help you relax and get back to sleep. Bergamot essential oil is also ideal for cleaning your home. Diffuse 15 to 30 minutes before bedtime.

Use in the bath

As essential oils are not water-soluble, they need to be mixed with an emulsifier before pouring into the bath. For example, they can be mixed with liquid soap or neutral shampoo (1 tablespoon). As a general rule, it is advisable not to exceed 10 drops per bath and not to stay in the bath for more than 20 minutes. Bergamot is effective for skin care and for relaxing before bedtime. Maximum 5 drops, diluted beforehand, added to the bath water.

Urinary tract infections : If you have a urinary tract infection, cure it faster by adding 4 drops of each of the following oils to your bath : bergamot, juniper, niaouli and Scots pine, diluted in a bath base such as our Solubol® dispersant.

Application by massage or compress

It is advisable to mix a few drops of essential oil with a vegetable oil (sweet almond, jojoba, macadamia, rose hip, argan, olive, etc) to use as a massage oil.

"To soothe damaged or irritated skin" : 2 to 3 drops in a vegetable base, massaged into the skin.

"To help purify oily, acne-prone skin" : 1 drop of bergamot + 1 drop of fine lavender in a neutral face cream.

"To promote good digestion" : particularly in cases of slow digestion or tension, mix 1 to 3 drops in a neutral vegetable oil (massage locally on the stomach).

100% pure and natural oil

An essential oil is made up of chemically defined molecules (around 10,000 have been identified) that have been secreted by special plant cells. It can be made up of between one and several hundred molecules, which helps to explain why some essential oils have numerous properties but differing therapeutic effectiveness. To guarantee the properties needed for effective aromatherapy, it is important that an essential oil is 100% pure and natural (not cut, deterpenated or mixed with alcohol or vegetable oils) and preferably organic. This is the case for the essential oils we sell. They are sold in tinted bottles with dropper caps.
