An essential ingredient in liniment, lime water is a natural alternative to many products for cleaning and soothing baby's bottom! As a make-up remover and facial cleanser, liniment is also an excellent choice.

But its advantages do not stop there. Beyond its use in cosmetics, limewater is known to kill parasites and various harmful fungi hiding in the bark of fruit trees (fungicidal action). Aquarists can also use it to maintain the level of calcium vital to the development of certain species such as calcareous algae, shellfish and hard corals. The decorative result obtained by plaster, lime paint and frescoes is exceptional, notably a unique velvety finish inside and out. You can therefore create your own frescoes on fresh plaster with limewater.

It is a multi-purpose product that is very useful in your daily life. It can be used in the home drugstore, in pharmacy and cosmetology, but also in many domestic applications.

Limewater is a product that originates from limestone, a natural rock found in abundance on Earth. Lime has been used since the dawn of time in construction and building.

Lime comes from a sedimentary rock, limestone (CaCO3). To obtain it, limestone blocks are heated to a very high temperature, around 900°C. The result is a white powder called quicklime, also known as calcium oxide (CaO). There are several types of lime. Quicklime is the powder obtained directly after calcination. If hydrated, quicklime turns into slaked lime, also known as air lime and known as calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2). This transformation is also accompanied by a strong release of heat. And the last lime you are likely to know is hydraulic lime. In this case, the limestone used is often impure and composed of other rocks such as clays. Hydraulic lime is, like air lime, obtained after hydration.

Limewater is a saturated solution of calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2, produced by mixing air lime with water. The air lime dissolves (weakly) in water and the filtrate obtained is limewater.

The definition is therefore very simple, limewater is simply a solution of water and lime.

Recipe for liniment oleo-calcaire : make a preparation composed of 50% limewater and 50% vegetable oil (for example olive oil). To promote emulsification, you can add an emulsifying wax to the mixture (1%). Add small amounts each time so that the emulsion holds well and the oil does not oxidise (smell rancid). The addition of Lavender Fine essential oil (a few drops) can also bring healing and soothing properties to the skin. Liniment can be used, for example, on washable wipes, to clean and soothe a baby's bottom. It is recommended not to rinse after use.

Cosmetics : Cleansing lotion or make-up remover : The resulting preparation called liniment can also be used as a make-up remover for the face. Be careful with the eyes if essential oils are added.

Lime water has a very high pH, basic or alkaline. When added to your homemade cosmetics, it alkalizes them (i.e. increases their pH) and thus reduces their acidity (as does baking soda).

Health : Burns, irritated skin, eczema : The resulting preparation called liniment has soothing properties. It can therefore be useful on irritated, burnt skin or even on eczema.

Domestic use :

- Pure lime water provides calcium and maintains the alkalinity of an aquarium to promote the development of certain animal species.

- Thanks to its antiseptic, fungicidal and cleaning properties, limewater will work wonders to kill parasites (insects) and various harmful fungi hiding in the bark of fruit trees (called tree white for this use). An application every two years in the middle of winter on the pre-brushed trunks and up to the first branches is an effective protection

- In construction, limewater is interesting for humidifying the supports, it is particularly the case for the realization of fine coatings (stucco, tadelakt...) or of a whitewash. Lime water can be used in fresco painting to dissolve pigments, protect the surface and create decorative veils. In construction, it is used to consolidate stones and mortars.

- Lime water is also used in a culinary process called nixtamalisation to improve the nutritional quality of certain foods, such as corn. Asians use it to prepare fruits and vegetables for cooking that would otherwise turn to mush. This allows the vegetables or fruit to remain firm and presentable when cooked, while still being cooked inside. In the past, eggs were preserved (for months) by soaking them in an air lime solution.

Close the bottle of limewater tightly after use: limewater reacts with the carbon dioxide in the air: a thin white film (limestone) can form on the surface.

Limewater is initially a colourless liquid, but in the presence of carbon dioxide, it takes on a whitish colour: limewater is said to become cloudy. This does not affect its properties. If it does, you can filter the liquid. 

Lime water has a very high pH and is corrosive, so never apply it pure to the skin, otherwise it will burn. Mixed with a fatty substance and emulsified, it is safe to apply.

Lime water can be irritating on the skin. Its pH is very basic and could cause burns. Once mixed with a vegetable oil, a reaction and an emulsion are formed, there is no danger (if the emulsion becomes diluted, shake the bottle well to reform it before each use). Always use it diluted in a vegetable oil-based preparation. It is preferable to store your limewater at room temperature, away from heat (below 30°C), away from light and air.
