Silverfish, a nocturnal of damp places

Who is the silverfish ?

The silver fish - Lepisma saccharina

Latin name : Lepisma saccharina
Order : Thysanura
Family : Lepismatidae
Size : 7 to 10 mm
Location : any wet habitat
Period : all year round

What to know about silverfish

Silverfish (or silverfish) are very agile insects. They owe their name to the small silvery scales that cover their entire body. Their quick and fluid movement has earned them their evocative name of "fish", although they have absolutely nothing to do with fish. In reality, they belong to the order Thysanura, a group of primitive insects.

Polyphagous, they can eat starch, crumbs, sugar, paper,... and they can also go up to 1 year without eating ! But they are also primarily detritivores, meaning they feed on decaying organic matter. They are attracted to food residues, moulds, plant debris, and even the droppings of other insects. Their diet makes them natural cleaning agents.

They can only live in humid and warm environments, which is why they are mainly found in bathrooms, kitchens, toilets, laundry rooms, basements or attics. With low fecundity, high longevity (up to 5 years) and a preference for nocturnal activity, silverfish generally go unnoticed in homes.

Be careful with books, especially if they are damp.

Means of prevention

The silverfish is a strange and fast little insect that can invite itself into our homes and arouse a certain repulsion. If you're dealing with an infestation of these silvery creatures, don't worry! There are simple and effective methods to eliminate them and prevent them from coming back.

1 - Dry out moist environments : Silverfish love dark, moist places. Fix water leaks, make sure bathrooms and kitchens are properly ventilated, and use dehumidifiers if necessary. By reducing the humidity, you will eliminate one of the key factors of their presence.

2 - Keep a clean house : Silverfish feed on organic debris, such as food crumbs and mold residue. Be sure to keep your home clean by cleaning surfaces regularly and vacuuming areas where they might be hiding.

3 - Fix Leaks : Silverfish are attracted to water leaks and wet areas. Be sure to fix leaks in pipes and faucets quickly to eliminate sources of moisture that attract them.

4 - Natural repellents : Essential oils such as lavender, tea tree or peppermint can be used as natural repellents. Spray these oils in places where silverfish often appear to deter them from returning.

5 - Seal cracks and openings : Silverfish can squeeze through small cracks and openings in walls and floors. Seal these gaps with caulk to keep them out of your home.

How to get rid of silverfish ?

The silver fish - Lepisma saccharina

1 - Treat the surfaces with our 4J insecticide diluted at 5% (Provide 500ml / 5 m²). Depending on your case and the surface of the parts to be treated, you can opt for this same insecticide, but in its concentrated form. You will then have to dilute it with water in a sprayer to the tune of 5% (i.e. 50ml of pure insecticide for 950ml of water).

2 -  For closed and potentially infested volumes (under the sink or bathtub, etc.), treat with the Ecodoo insecticide bomb or the Aries flying insecticide.

3 - You can also treat infested areas with anti-ant oil, which can also be used on silverfish.

4 - Sprinkle all infested or passing places but not wet with our diatomaceous earth. For an action in the smallest recesses, small holes and interstices difficult to access, prefer the diatom to be sprayed in the form of an aerosol. Reduce the humidity of the room or area as much as possible (ventilation, heating, elimination of leaks, etc.), as the lack of water is often fatal for this insect.

5 - Aries cockroach/silverfish traps will allow you to check their presence and control the degree of infestation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Silverfish

Q: There are silverfish in my apartment. I bought the diluted 4J product. How often should I reapply the product ?
A: This product can be renewed several times a week until the insect has completely disappeared. Don't forget the undersides of bathtubs and narrow spaces (slots, holes), these are places where they know how to lodge and reproduce. But beware, we know that silverfish can only live with heat and humidity (kitchen, bathroom). Other complementary processes can promote its disappearance: ventilation, humidity absorbers, reduced heating (below 15°C).

Q: I have silverfish at home and I would like to get rid of them... What insecticide do you recommend, and are they compatible with my cat ?
AThe most effective will be to use 4J insecticide diluted to 5% for environmental treatment. Avoid contact between the cat and the insecticide, the latter being composed of pyrethrum. Wait a few hours before putting your pet back in the room that has been treated. You can also sprinkle your cat with our insect repellent dry shampoo composed of margosa and talc.

Q: I would like to know what product to kill silverfish? They always come out at night in all the rooms.
A: This insect can only live with heat and humidity (kitchen, bathroom). To eliminate them, there are several solutions and several products.

Q: Very interested in your site, I would like to know if the proposed insecticide is also effective, very effective, against silverfish ?
AOur insecticide is effective on silverfish as well as most insects. You can use it either in its ready-to-use form or in its concentrated form by diluting it up to 5% with water in a sprayer.
