What you need to know about the wheat weevil

In the vast fields of wheat, an insidious threat lurks : the wheat weevil. This small beetle is a farmer's nightmare, as it can cause considerable damage to stored crops and compromise food safety. Fortunately, control and prevention measures are deployed to deal with this formidable pest.

This small beetle native to wheat fields can also turn into a formidable invader in our homes. Feeding on dry grains, cereals and stored food products, this pest can cause significant damage to food supplies and become a source of frustration for owners.

This insect is mainly found in cereal reserves but it can also be found in chickpeas, chestnuts, flour, semolina, noodles and all foods rich in starch. Closely related species can attack rice or maize.

Identification and prevention

The first step in combating this invader is to be able to properly identify it. Wheat weevil are small insects, reddish-brown in color, usually measuring 2 to 3 mm in length. They have an oval shape and an elongated rostrum, characteristic of the Curculionidae family to which they belong.

Preventive measures can be adopted to limit their presence in our homes :

1 - Prevention from purchase : Prevention is the best weapon against wheat weevil infestation. When buying grains, cereals or food products in bulk, it is essential to check their condition carefully. Avoid buying products with damaged packaging or suspicious appearance.

2 - Proper storage : To prevent wheat weevil from spreading in food supplies at home, it is crucial to store dry produce in airtight containers. Glass jars or sealed plastic boxes are great options to keep insects out and feeding.

3 - Regular inspection : A regular inspection of cupboards is recommended to quickly detect any infestation of wheat weevil. Watch for signs of insecticidal activity, such as the presence of small holes in the packages or the presence of fine food particles.

How do you get rid of the wheat weevil ?

The wheat weevil - Sitophilus granariusDestroy all heavily damaged products, and freeze those that can still be saved. Clean the cupboard thoroughly.

Proceed methodically :
1 - Take a large bin bag and throw away everything that is not in a totally airtight box, even products that seem to be impeccable.
2 - Vacuum every nook and cranny of the cupboard or storeroom.
3 - Fill a basin with hot water + washing-up liquid + disinfectant (organic, of course!). Using a brush, scrub the entire cupboard, leaving no nooks and crannies untouched.
4 - When everything is completely dry, treat the entire cupboard with our 4J insecticide diluted at 5% (allow 500ml for 5m² of surface treated). If you're treating large areas, use the same insecticide in concentrated form. In this case, you'll need to dilute the insecticide with water in a sprayer to a level of 5% (50ml of insecticide for 950ml of water).

5 - Place a few sachets of food moth repellent in various places in the cupboard (the treatment is the same for wheat moths as for food moths).

6 - Place food moth traps (Aries or Kapo) in various places in the cupboard or in the rooms.

7 - All that's left to do is put all your food back in the cupboards, but always in completely airtight boxes.
8 - If you still have butterflies flying around, either in the room or in your cupboards, you can get rid of them for good using either Ecodoo insecticide spray or Aries flying insect repellent.
