The cellar beetles (blaps)

Going down to your cellar or cellar, did you find yourself faced with blaps from the cellars ? It is a unique and fascinating little insect due to its extreme adaptability to darkness. So be careful as much as possible not to destroy it. If you have a strong phobia, discover in this file a set of answers and products that will allow you to best fight against this insect.

Who's the cellar beetle ?

The cellar beetle - Blaps mucronataLatin name : Blaps mucronata
Order : Coleoptera
Family : Tenebrionidae
Size : 2 to 3 cm
Location : any humid place (cellar, pantry)
Period : all year round

What you need to know about cellar beetle

Originally living in caves, this flightless insect easily adapted to all dark, humid and quiet places. Feeding on decomposing organic matter, such as rodent droppings, its population generally grows at the same time as that of rats or mice.

These other names send shivers down your spine: "Funeral beetle", "Stinking beetle", "Presage of death"...

This beetle has a bad reputation for several reasons. He first frequents dark and unsanitary places and when he is flushed out, instead of fleeing, he stands up arrogantly, raising his rear axle, and if you are not careful, he sends you a foul-smelling, staining aerosol spray. Its ecology and behavior are therefore enough to disgrace it, its dull black color only darkens its image a little more.

Amazing Camouflage

Cellar beetle is a master of camouflage. Its dark carapace, ranging from black to dark brown, allows it to blend perfectly into the darkness of its underground environment. This unique feature gives it a huge survival advantage, escaping potential predators looking for easy prey.

An adaptation to darkness

One of the most amazing characteristics of the cellar beetle is its ability to live in conditions of total darkness for long periods of time. In the absence of light, this small beetle has developed highly developed senses for finding its way around and finding food. Its sensitive antennae allow it to detect chemical particles emitted by decaying organic matter, its main diet.

Preserve their habitat

Despite decades of study, the cellar beetle remains largely a mystery to scientists. Its biology, behavior and ecological role in underground ecosystems remain poorly understood. Further research is needed to unlock the secrets of this fascinating creature of the deep.

Due to their unique and fragile habitat, Cellar beetle populations are vulnerable to environmental disturbances. Human activities, such as cave exploration, construction and mining, seriously threaten these small beetles and their ecosystem. The conservation of their habitat is therefore essential to ensure their survival.

Caves and caverns are fragile ecosystems, often susceptible to human disturbance. Local authorities and conservation organizations work hand in hand to protect these habitats by regulating human activities such as uncontrolled exploration, mining and pollution.

How to eliminate cellar beetle ?

If you are really phobic of this type of insects and they systematically disturb your descent to the cellar or the storeroom, we offer you various natural products to fight against them. But remember that this is an insect that feeds on decaying products. By removing the origin of the problem (presence of rats, mice, etc.), the problem normally resolves itself.

1 - Start by eliminating the origin of the organic matter and evacuating all the waste that can be used as food for them.
2 - Place a few cockroach traps in infested areas.

3 - Spray directly on the visible insects our All Insects Aries insecticide based on pyrethrum.

4 - Sprinkle all infested or passing places with our diatomaceous earth. For an action in the smallest recesses, small holes and interstices difficult to access, prefer the diatom to be sprayed in the form of an aerosol.
