Lavender essential oil - (lavandula officinalis)

Lavender fieldOrigin : A highly prized plant, common in the south of France, Italy and Dalmatia, where it grows from 700 to 1,400 metres above sea level (the French variety - the oldest known - being the most highly prized), lavender essential oil has many interesting properties...

Part used : Flowers obtained by steam distillation of the plant

Main known constituents : linalyl and geranyl ethers (35-55% linalyl acetate), geraniol, linalool, cineol, d-borneol, limonene, I-pinene, caryophyllene, butyric and valerianic ethers, coumarin...

On our website you'll find organic lavender essential oil and many other quality oils. You'll also find synergies for diffusion.

Lavender or Lavenders

We always say LAVENDER, but there are several varieties of Lavender.

  • Lavandula angustifolia or officinalis : nicknamed true lavender, Alpine lavender, fine lavender, etc. Rare and expensive because it only grows at altitude, it is the best lavender for its fragrance and has the most soothing effect.
  • Lavandula latifolia or spica : Commonly known as spike lavender. It is easier to grow as it grows easily in the valleys (0 and 600 m), but its scent is less subtle than that of real lavender, although it is more effective against burns and wasp stings.
  • Lavandula stoechas : Also known as stechas lavender or butterfly lavender. Very decorative in gardens. While its properties can be of interest in aromatherapy, its camphor odour makes it unusable in perfumery, but useful for fighting infections.
  • There are many other varieties of lavender, such as Lavandula viridis, lavandula pinnata, lavandula lanata, lavandula dentata,  but they are rarely used in aromatherapy.
  • Lavandula intermedia or hybrida : It is no longer called Lavender but Lavandin. The most common varieties are Lavandin Grosso, Lavandin Abrial, Lavandula burnatii or super.

True lavender essential oil contains most of the biochemical components found in super lavandin: (Z)-beta-ocimene, (E)-beta-ocimene, myrcene, limonene, alpha-pinene, camphene, beta-pinene, linalool, borneol, terpinene-4-ol, alpha-terpineol, lavandulol, beta-caryophyllene, (E)-beta-farnesene, germacrene-D, linalyl acetate, lavandulyl acetate, geranyl acetate, neryl acetate, camphor, cryptone, 1,8-cineole, but not always in the same percentages. In lavandin, for example, there is more linalool, cineol and camphor than in true lavender, but less terpinen-4-ol or lavandulyl acetate.

So if you're looking for an essential oil close to true lavender but at a reasonable price, look no further than lavandin super.

Properties of Lavender essential oil

Lavender oil has anti-venomous properties that are well known to some hunters. In the Alps, when their dogs are bitten by vipers, hunters pick lavender, crumple it up and rub it on the bitten animals. The venom is immediately neutralised.

Its antiseptic power is stronger than that of phenol, cresol and guaiacol.

  • At a dose of 4.5%, lavender oil kills Eberth's bacillus (typhoid) and staphylococcus.
  • At 5%, it destroys Loeffler's bacillus (diphtheria): Professors Morel and Rochaix, 1926.
  • Lavender oil kills the tuberculosis bacillus at a dose of 0.02% (Professors Courmont, Morel, Bay, 1928).
  • The vapours destroy pneumococcus and haemolytic streptococcus in 12 to 24 hours.

Diffusing Lavender essential oil

Unless you have an allergic tendency, you can of course diffuse lavender essential oil pure or mixed with other essential oils. To make the most of its benefits, the best diffuser is a micro-diffusion diffuser.

Lavender essential oil ab

Diffusion of true lavender essential oil or lavandin super essential oil is mainly recommended for calming stress, anxiety and restlessness, or for promoting sleep. In this case, it can be mixed with mandarin, orange or petitgrain.

On the Canadian site passeportsante.net, we found some interesting information :

  • All in all, it seems that lavender essential oil can have a slight relaxing effect. For example, it reduced postoperative stress in patients who had just undergone a cardiotomy. It also reduced the anxiety of patients admitted to intensive care, women undergoing haemodialysis and volunteers placed in an isolation room.
  • Lavender essential oil has also proved useful in reducing agitation in subjects suffering from dementia and aggression in elderly patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease.
  • The results of a trial involving 200 subjects also indicate that diffusing lavender essential oil in the waiting room can help reduce anxiety in patients visiting the dentist. A similar study involving 340 patients confirmed this effect.
  • In recent trials, Asian researchers, mostly Japanese, have also found that lavender essential oil can reduce certain physiological markers of stress (cortisol levels, for example) and blood pressure.
  • Nevertheless, preliminary clinical trials tend to confirm the value of lavender, particularly in promoting good sleep or treating insomnia, whether or not associated with symptoms of depression. A bath scented with lavender essential oil also reduced agitation and promoted deep sleep in babies compared with an unscented bath.
  • The diffusion of lavender essential oil also increased the concentration of subjects at work : 36 young people aged 24 on average carried out five one-hour work sessions interspersed with 30 minutes' rest. Those exposed to lavender essential oil during the rest period were more concentrated and less sleepy in the afternoon than subjects in the placebo group or those exposed to jasmine essential oil.

The essential Lavender essential oil

In summary, it is one of those essential oils that you should always have on hand. At home of course, but also when hiking, camping, or even on a picnic !

Use, instructions for use and properties of true Lavender essential oil are taken from the excellent book by Dr Jean Valnet "Aromatherapy"
