Introduction and method

Insecticide 4JInsecticide 4JThe T.E.C. laboratory conducted trials to determine the biological efficacy of the speciality "INSECTICIDE 4J 10%" for use in insect control. The trial consisted of shooting insects directly at a realistic dose and recording mortality over time. The trial focused on bedbugs, cat fleas and tiger mosquitoes.

Treatments were carried out with sprayers for use in the laboratory. The quantity of product actually applied was measured by weighing. The arthropods were held in a glass ring in the centre of the floor of the test chamber. Simultaneously, the ring was removed, the product was sprayed and a timer was activated.

The sprayer was at a 45 degree angle and the nozzle was at a distance of 30 cm from the arthropods.

One experimenter announced time intervals and recorded the data on a table by a second experimenter observing the decrease.

An arthropod was considered to be 'shrinking' or 'dead' if it could no longer move properly.

The dead arthropods were then collected in Petri dishes for a 24-hour evaluation. The floor of the treatment area was washed and cleaned following the same procedure as for the flying insect test (NF T 72-320).

Interpretation of results: time to kill all insects (KT100) / 24-hour mortality rate of adults and nymphs.

3 repetitions were carried out.

Bed bug tests - Cimex lectularius

  1. Product tested
    The sample used for the tests was marked as follows :
    INSECTICIDE 4J-10% - Manufactured on 26/08/2016
    The sample is kept in the laboratory for 3 months for any subsequent analyses.
  2. Test dose
    3 ml /m² of the product 4J 10% is applied to the insects for direct fire tests.
  3. Target insects
    Bed bugs : Adult males and females + nymph from a specialist institute (Pharm'Insect - France), reared under controlled conditions and fed on rabbit blood. The insects were used immediately. The insects were not acclimatised prior to the test. No anaesthesia was used.
  • 3 batches (replicates) of 25 adults were exposed to the product.
  • 3 replicates were conducted = 75 insects per factor.
  • Untreated batches were monitored in parallel to check the viability of the living material.

Treatment procedure
The solution was applied directly using a hand-held sprayer.
The experimenter recorded insect mortality at regular time intervals, depending on the speed of action, to determine the short-term kinetics of the effect. After a total exposure time of 1 hour, the insects were transferred to untreated inert surfaces with a nutrient substrate and available water. This was placed under climatic rearing conditions.

Experimental conditions
Observations made on arthropods must take account of the following two types of effect :

Observation of the sacrificial effect (KD) : during the 1 hour exposure period, the sacrificial effect was judged by counting several times the number of individuals moving normally and the others. An observation was also made after 4 h.

Observation of the lethal effect : 24 hours after the start of the insect exposure, the dead and living insects were counted. All immobile insects with no leg movement that no longer reacted to mechanical stimulation were considered dead.


Results and conclusion

After a maximum of 15 minutes, 100% of the bed bugs were dead.

Under the conditions of these tests, with the samples provided, the insect strains and methods considered, the speciality "INSECTICIDE 4J - 10% concentration" showed very good insecticidal and definitive efficacy against bed bugs.

    - Temperature : 27°C +/-2°C,
    - Relative humidity : 80% +/-10%,
    - Light : 16:8 hours (illuminate 700lux: darkness) insects were used immediately. There was no acclimatisation before the test. No anaesthesia was used.
    • 3 batches (replicates) of 25 adults were exposed to the product + 24 nymphs
    • 3 replicates were conducted = 75 insects per factor.
    • Untreated batches were monitored in parallel to check the viability of the living material.

Tiger mosquito testing - Aedes Albopictus

      3 ml /m² of the product 4J 10% is applied to the insects for direct fire tests.
    3. Target insects
      Tiger mosquitoes: 50 +/-2 four to six days old females of Aedes albopictus, laboratory colony reared since 1992 (origin of insects: ORSTOM BONDY/QUI + SEAMAR).
      Colony rearing conditions: in a climate-controlled chamber, kept at 28 +/-1°C, 75% +/-10 RH, and lit 700 lux 16 hours + dark 8 hours.
      Mosquitoes were reared in 50 cm square compartment cages and fed with water and sugar + blood meal for the females.
      The females were starved on blood meal for 24 hours prior to the test. The insects were used immediately. There was no acclimatisation prior to the trial. No anaesthesia was used.
