Use and application of 4J Penn'ty Bio insecticide

Presentation of 4J Insecticide

Natural insecticide 4J

4J natural insecticideWhile most conventional insecticides on the market inhibit the insects' nervous system (allowing them to gradually develop an addiction to chemical molecules such as Permethrin, Pyrethroid, etc.), our 4J insecticide has a dual action : neurotoxic (pyrethrum) and "asphyxiating" (potassium) on the insect.

Containing only products of plant origin, it is easily and rapidly biodegradable.

This contact insecticide is effective on most crawling and flying insects.

4J insecticide is made from plant extracts and potassium soap*. It contains no compounds such as heavy metal salts, chlorine compounds, organophosphorus compounds or phenols, which are dangerous to humans and warm-blooded animals. It is also free from pyrethroids or any synthetic pesticides.

It is an insecticide that can be used in Organic Farming against harmful organisms in livestock buildings and installations, in accordance with EEC Regulation No. 2092/91 Annex II.

* Potassium or potassium salt is a natural product. It is found in various forms in agriculture, in salt-free diets and in soap.

Dilution for use of 4J insecticide

1. 10% concentration (900 ml water + 100 ml pure 4J)

With this concentration, you can destroy all insects very quickly, whatever their size or resistance.

This concentration is essential for wood bugs (mortality in 2h30, gendarme 3 minutes), recommended for bed bugs and preferable for hornets (at 3%, the hornet takes 3 hours to die).

2. 5% concentration (950 ml water + 50 ml pure 4J)

This concentration will kill most flying or crawling insects very quickly, whatever their size or resistance (except bedbugs, wood bugs and hornets).

The test carried out on cockroaches confirmed 100% mortality in less than 4 minutes.
Here are some of the insects on which our insecticide has been tested :

  1. Cockroaches
  2. Flies
  3. Ants
  4. Wasps
  5. Clothes moths, Food moths
  6. Spiders
  7. Dog and cat fleas
  8. Mosquitoes

3. Concentration between 1% and 2% (990 ml of water + 10 ml of pure 4J)

With this concentration you can treat all the mini insects in the house (gnats, mosquitoes, mites, etc).

Here's a table to give you an idea of the surface areas that can be covered depending on the dilution required (and therefore the insect targeted) and the packaging we sell :

How to use 4J Insecticide

Utilisation de l'insecticide 4JHow to use 4J Insecticide4J Insecticide comes in 2 different forms :

  • Ready-to-use : You don't need to do anything, as these products are already diluted with water. All you have to do is use them as they are for your treatment (shake well before use). Available in 500 ml spray cans and 1 litre refill cans for our 3 dilutions: 1.5%5% and 10%.
    • Concentrated form: As this product is in its pure form, you'll need to dilute it with water before applying it to surfaces.

1 - Prepare your water + pure insecticide mixture by measuring out as required and shaking well before use.

2 - Apply the 4J insecticide to the surfaces. You can use :
- Either a spray bottle
- Or a well-cleaned garden sprayer, adjusted to produce small drops rather than a mist. Avoid using a large spray which will soak all your floors. The idea is to wet the insect, its larva and its egg without drowning them.

Remember : 4J is a contact insecticide, so you need to treat the insects or infested areas, not the surrounding air. Its residual effect lasts a few hours and depends on the ambient temperature. Its destructive action is at its maximum when you touch the insect.

How do you go about it ?

1 litre of ready-to-use insecticide (diluted with water) will treat around 10 m².

To be effective, you first need to find the source of the insect proliferation, then treat it. There's no point in killing isolated flies if you have a place where they proliferate and reproduce.

Destroying the eggs, larvae and nymphs will eradicate the colony fairly quickly.

To destroy harmful insects effectively, you need to know a minimum amount about them.

Our various thematic files on insects can help you.

A few basic rules for using the 4J :

  • Shake well before use
  • Spray on insects and all surfaces and nooks and crannies where they can settle and breed.
  • Don't forget the cracks in parquet floors, the gaps in skirting boards, beams, etc.
  • Given the presence of allergens (Linalol, Citral, Geraniol, Limonene), it is advisable to air the room during and/or after treatment.
  • The presence of potassium soap in the formula may leave a greasy film on treated surfaces. This substance is not harmful and is perfectly washable. Be careful not to overdose the product and to spread it evenly to avoid problems during cleaning.
  • 4J insecticide will work for a few hours after application (around 4 to 6 hours, depending on the temperature of the room). After this waiting time, you can clean the floors with a damp cloth to remove any traces of potassium soap. Don't wait several days before cleaning, otherwise the soap may dry out and washing will become more difficult.

Here are a few examples of how 4J can be used :
  • Treat fabrics or cupboards against moths.
  • Treat carpets and bedding for dust mites.
  • Treat kitchen cupboards and floors against cockroaches and ants.
  • Treat your houseplants against aphids, red spiders, whitefly, thrips, etc. (use at 1%).
  • Treat floors against floor fleas.

Effectiveness of 4J insecticide

Insecticide 4J - Testé par un laboratoire indépendant

This contact insecticide does not kill insects instantly. Its action can last from a few seconds to a few hours, depending on the size and resistance of the insect, as well as the concentration used and the dose received by the insect at the time of spraying.

It is an insecticide with little repellent action. It acts immediately on contact and, because of its composition, will not last. So don't expect it to be destructive for several days.

If the conditions of use are respected, all the tests carried out on various insects have been 100% conclusive. To help you better understand how to combat them, don't hesitate to consult our thematic files on insects (see here).

Obviously, we haven't tested our insecticide on all the insects on our planet. However, we have tested it on the insects most frequently found in our homes : Whitefly, spider, cockroach, woodlouse, ant, hornet, wasp, moth, fly, blue fly, gnat, mosquito, flea, bedbug, wood bug, gendarme, scutigère, silvan.

Tests carried out by an independent laboratory also confirm its effectiveness on the following insects : bedbugs, floor fleas, flies and mosquitoes. To see them, follow this link.

Frequently asked questions about 4J insecticide

Q: If you buy 4J insecticide concentrated or diluted, how long does it remain active and does it lose its effectiveness after a while ?

A: Our 4J insecticide in its concentrated form can be kept for 10 to 12 months without any problem in good storage conditions (original bottle away from light and especially heat). After that, it will start to lose its effectiveness over the weeks. In its ready-to-use form (once diluted with water), the shelf life will be shorter, around 6 months. Once again, the product will remain usable, but the action of the plant pyrethrum it contains will begin to diminish.

Q: What essential oils are contained in the insecticides and repellents in this range? Are they highly concentrated (to find out what they smell like) ?

A: Litsea cubeba, lavandin grosso, lemongrass, geranium etc. This complex of essential oils acts as a synergiser in the formula (reinforcing the product's action). The content of the complex is indicated on each product sheet.

Q: As you say the product is rather viscous, what do you recommend as a sprayer and how can I wash afterwards so that it doesn't clog up during or after spraying. Thank you

AIndeed, the potassium soap contained in the 4J insecticide formula, which has an asphyxiating action on larvae and eggs, thickens the finished product a little. But don't worry about which sprayer to use. It can be a hand-held sprayer of this type (see here) or, if you have larger surfaces to treat, a garden sprayer (e.g. 3 litres) bought from any garden centre. As long as you keep to dilutions of 5% or 10%, the nozzles of the sprayer you use will not get blocked. If this does happen, hot water will unblock it without difficulty.

Q : It says that 4J Insecticide is "free of Pyrethroids", but further down you state that it "contains pyrethrum (neurotoxic for insects)". Isn't pyrethrum a member of the pyrethroid family ?

A: Pyrethrins should not be confused with PYRETHRINOIDS, which are synthetic products (permethrin, phenothrin, depallethrin, esdepallethrin). To find out more, see our dossier on the subject.

Q: Can 4J nsecticide also be sprayed on the skin (to avoid being bitten by bedbugs). Or is pyrethrum a problem in contact with human  skin?

ANo, 4J is not designed to be sprayed on the skin, only on surfaces. There is a risk of allergic reaction. Although pyrethrum is of natural origin, it is not harmless. To protect yourself from the bites of biting and sucking insects such as bedbugs, you should use our eucalyptus citriodora-based product. This product is specifically formulated for cutaneous application.

QIs it a problem if 4J Insecticide is sprayed in a kitchen (presence of food) ? Is pyrethrum toxic if ingested by humans ?

A: Before spraying surfaces with 4J Insecticide, make sure you remove all unprotected foodstuffs (open bags, fruit baskets, etc), to avoid the pyrethrum being ingested. Our product has the advantage of containing no additives. It is therefore relatively short-lived. In just a few hours, the pyrethrum will break down and disappear. However, if you touch food during treatment, the molecule will inevitably penetrate it and you will end up ingesting it at some point.

Q : Is it a problem if 4J Insecticide is sprayed on clothes ? Or could it damage them ?

AIn theory, no. But it all depends on the fabric. 4J insecticide contains potassium soap, which has an asphyxiating effect on insect larvae and eggs. This soap may leave a small greasy film, but it's still easy to wash off. On valuable or delicate textiles, there are 2 other methods, either the washing machine at 60°C (for textiles that accept this), or the use of Ecodoo All Insects aerosol. Place the clothes to be treated in a bin bag. Spray the inside with Ecodoo insecticide. Close the bag tightly to make it as airtight as possible. Wait at least 24 hours before reopening.

Q: Is pyrethrum effective against textile moths (you seem to indicate that it is, in the 10% diluted product sheet, but not in the concentrated product sheet).

AYes, of course. 4J insecticide is a universal insecticide. In other words, it can be used against all insects. The difference then lies in the dilution used. Here are the dilutions we recommend, depending on the target :
- 1.5 %/2 % = Small insects and mites (midges, mosquitoes, etc.)
- 5 % = Most insects, including floor fleas and moths (food and textile)
- 10% = Resistant insects (hornets, wood bugs, horse flies etc., bed bugs)
Find out more about treating textile moths in our dossier.

Q : I'm pregnant and have an asthmatic child at home. Is 4J insecticide contraindicated ?

A: Our 4J insecticide contains plant pyrethrum, potassium soap and a synergy of essential oils. As you are pregnant, it is recommended that the treatment is carried out by someone other than yourself, to avoid exposing yourself to the smell of essential oils contained in the products. The same applies to your asthmatic child. Even if they remain in small proportions, it is still preferable that you do not expose yourself to them. The advantage of our products is that they contain no additives or synergisers in the formulas to increase the persistence of the products. If the treatment is carried out in the morning, you can use the treated rooms again in the afternoon without any worries.

Q : As far as storing the 4j is concerned, will it be enough to store it in the basement without a window, with a light on only when we're there, or is there a risk that the product will deteriorate ? Is room temperature sufficient, or does it have to be refrigerated ?

A: As far as the shelf life of 4J is concerned, this product holds up well between 10 and 30°C. Above that temperature, the pyrethrum it contains will degrade. Below that, it will crystallise. This will not affect the active ingredient. However, it will be necessary to leave it at room temperature for several hours (or even a day or two) before the crystals disappear. In absolute terms, this product should be protected from UV rays and heat for optimum conservation.
